Imam and Pastor Receive UN Award For Intercultural Innovation [1]

Imam Dr Muhammad Ashafa, Dr Alan Channer and Pastor Dr James Wuye at the UNAOC/BMW 2017 'Intercultural Award Ceremony' in New York [1]

Pastor James Wuye and Imam Muhammad Ashafa, of the Interfaith Mediation Centre in Nigeria, were among five recipients of this year’s prestigious 2017 ‘Intercultural Innovation Award’, conferred by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations and BMW. The award ceremony took place at UN Headquarters in New York on 29th November.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary, the annual Peace Awards honors Africa and Diaspora Peace Heroes who have demonstrated a profound commitment to serve the community and promote peace in our society. This year’s honorees are Pastor James Wuye and Imam Muhammad Ashafa, of the Interfaith Mediation Center, Kaduna, Nigeria.

Oprah Winfrey's landmark series 'Belief' has been broadcast in the United States. The second episode, 'Love's Story', concluded with an eight minute segment on Pastor James Wuye and Imam Muhammad Ashafa - who 'come together to reconcile and to honor one of the most sacred teachings at the heart of both their faiths: love your enemies'.

The second episode of 'Belief,' to be aired by OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) on 19 October, features a segment on Imam Muhammad Ashafa and Pastor James Wuye. Entitled, 'Love's story', it takes the viewer on 'a journey around the world in search of what it means to love one another'. The episode ends with the story of 'two leaders in Nigeria who... come together to reconcile and to honor one of the most sacred teachings at the heart of both their faiths: love your enemies'.

Two Swedish newspapers, Expressen and Dagen, have reported on the work of the Imam and the Pastor in Kaduna this week. Expressen is one of the biggest newspapers in Sweden, Dagen is a Christian paper. The title of the Expressen article is 'Här lever hoppet i Boko Harams Nigeria' which means 'Here lives hope in the Nigeria of Boko Haram'.

Joseph Wainaina fled from Eldoret in 1992, when his house was burnt to the ground in ethnic clashes. Some years later, whilst researching where to buy weapons to take revenge, a friend challenged him with the line 'forgive those who sin against us'. Wainaina was overcome by a spirit of forgiveness. Since then he has been working with Initiatives of Change for reconciliation between Kenya's different ethnic groups.
